Veteran Speakers Retreat Legends of the Speaking Profession Criteria
Criteria for Selection (exceptions to these may be made with an affirmative vote from 75% of living former recipients)
- Minimum 60 years of age
- Minimum 20 years as a professional speaker
- Outstanding national/international stature
- Unique contributions to the platform and to the speaking profession
- Responsible public citizen
- Not limited to NSA members
- Up to five awards to be made annually with, normally, one or two given posthumously
- Each recipient, or his or her representative, will be expected to accept the award in person at the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening.
- Candidates may be nominated by any VSR participant with final selections to be voted on by living former recipients
- Invitations to honorees to be made by former recipients who, as a rule, will also serve as their introducers
- Individuals, or their representatives, who turn down their selection for legitimate reasons may be renominated in subsequent years. A second turndown, normally, will result in the candidate being removed from further consideration.
(The NSA process for the Cavett Award is that any NSA member may nominate a candidate by completing a nomination form or writing a letter of nomination. These are circulated to all living former Cavett recipients who cast a preliminary ballot for their first five choices. The five candidates receiving the highest number of votes are then presented at a meeting of former recipients immediately prior to the NSA convention where a secret ballot is cast until there is one candidate with a majority vote of those present. There is no specific provision for a posthumous award.)
